Recommendation on the Future of Erasmus+ Beyond 2027
Within the framework of the European Union’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the period 2028–2034, the European Commission is proposing a new Erasmus+ programme. In response to the announcement of this successor programme, the Flemish Education Council has taken the initiative to issue this recommendation.
Erasmus+ is of strategic importance to the internationalisation of education in Flanders and contributes to the achievement of fundamental educational and societal goals such as inclusion, citizenship, sustainability, and professional development. Erasmus+ serves not only as a lever for individual growth and educational quality, but also for fostering social cohesion, shared responsibility, and democratic awareness across Europe. The Flemish Education Council therefore calls for an increase in the programme’s budget in order to continue fulfilling these ambitions.
To further strengthen the current programme’s assets, the Flemish Education Council formulates six key recommendations:
- Involve all stakeholders through European, national, and regional interest organisations.
- Acknowledge the broad objectives of the programme, recognising that education serves purposes beyond merely the labour market or security.
- Ensure a well-considered balance between mobility opportunities and strategic partnerships.
- Give due attention to all levels of education and their specific characteristics.
- Strive for simplification and transparency in the programme’s design and implementation.
- Enable cooperation with other countries,
